Offsetting carbon emissions – how does it work?
Offsetting carbon emissions is one way to increase awareness about climate change and take another step toward global reduction of earth-warming greenhouse gas. Now you can buy carbon sinks from grass farmers to offset your emissions.
Carbon Farmers of America have created a project to build topsoil and reverse global warming. Much of the topsoil on U.S. land has eroded and washed away as a result of monocrop production, overplowing and other types of land mismanagement.
The excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that causes global warming can be transformed through photosynthesis by grassland plants that decay and become stable soil organic matter. According to Carbon Farmers of America, soil organic matter is the key to soil fertility and a stable climate. They say if the soil fertility of the Great Plains that has been destroyed in the last 150 years could be restored, carbon dioxide would be reduced to near pre-industrial levels.
Topsoil is the only carbon sink on earth large enough to capture the excess carbon in the atmosphere. And the soils desperately need the carbon.
Family farmers are holistically managing grassland farms and carefully planning the grazing of livestock to develop the topsoil. Carbon Farmers of America offer the opportunity to purchase carbon futures to support this work and provide one option for carbon offsetting.
