Safer Home Products

Take a look around your home. How many things are made from plastic and other chemically-treated synthetic materials?

Plastics, glues and other chemicals can make the air inside your home a toxic soup. Plastics and vinyl outgas volatile organic compounds linked to cancer, childhood learning disabilities, obesity, infertility, depression, chronic fatigue and sleep disorders.

Water and food kept in plastic containers can be contaminated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Glass makes a safer container for food and drinks.

Shower curtains often are a source of outgassing plastic in the home. Choose a cotton shower curtain or glass enclosure. If you are building a new home or remodeling bathrooms, consider making the shower large enough that no shower curtain is needed.

Avoid particle-board furniture, which usually contains formaldehyde. Instead look for formaldehyde free particle board, or use wheatboard - a good and inexpensive substitute for particle-board products.

Solid wood flooring that is nailed down or mortar-set ceramic tile, linoleum, cork and some rubber flooring are healthier choices than carpeting or vinyl tile. Also, rugs made from natural fibers can provide softness and sound control, and can be removed for cleaning.

Reduce your body burden of toxic chemicals and protect your family by make these safer choices for your home.
