Vacation in your own backyard
High gas prices and global warming pollution associated with travel may be good reasons to keep vacations close to home this year.
Getting acquainted with nearby areas of natural beauty and local attractions can keep your travel miles down and increase your appreciation for where you live. Start really close to home - like your own back yard, balcony or patio.
Make it a place of retreat with gardens and comfortable places to lounge. Have a picnic or invite friends over for an outdoor party.
When you cook outdoors, avoid using lighter fluid which contributes to air pollution. Try a charcoal chimney available at most hardware stores. Notice places that might be fun within walking, biking or hiking distance - or try taking public transportation.
For an adventure, go to a state park you've never visited, or check out less well known parks to avoid crowds and the overuse of popular parks. If you decide to stay in a hotel on your vacation, be sure to practice all the energy saving habits you have at home such as turning off the lights, TV and other electronics when you are not using them. And take advantage of the green practices the hotel offers such as opting to skip having your sheets changed everyday for energy and water savings. Use only the towels and free products you need while you are there. Keep in mind that everything you use gets replaced and requires energy consumption. By consciously making an effort to have a lower impact when you travel, you help sustain the beauty and abundance of this amazing planet. Have a Happy Earth Day.
