Permaculture City

How would a city built on the principles of permaculture look?

Topsoil in the United States is eroding at an alarming rate and so are our communities. Just ask yourself how often you see your neighbor. How many hours a week do you spend alone in your car.

Permaculture offers the philosophy, tools and systems for building a better world by observing good health in nature and designing systems around what nature does to create a lush thicket or a clean pond teaming with life. The designs and systems of healthy ecosystems can be applied to the way we live as well as to landscapes, gardens and farms.

A city designed with permaculture principles in mind, would make it easier to have a sense of community.

The changes might look like something this: Rapid transit would be convenient and effective. Centers of activity and higher density housing would be built around transportation hubs, with parks and gardens within walking distance. Food would be grown close to home, and the things people use most would be nearby.

Nature’s principles can be used to organize society in a sustainable way. Add modern technology, such as solar and wind power, and we can have a higher quality of life, and our children and grandchildren can too.
